Good Guy Judas

"If God doesn't exist, then who wrote the Bible?" Few Christians would actually say something so ridiculous, but the joke has a grain of truth to it. Many Christians view the Bible as an accurate historical text given to man by God. They dismiss inconsistent portions as human error, but never suspect the authors of intentional falsehood. Still, the majority of people today will easily laugh at how Joseph Smith deceived his followers into believing in the Latter Day Saint movement. But let's assume, just for a moment, that people in biblical times were just as flawed as people today. Now, place a Joseph Smith figure in that time period. Without the internet and 2000 years of scientific knowledge, what would have been the result?

This isn't just a thought experiment, though - it actually happened. The current Bible is the result of picking and choosing from over a thousand texts. Among the discarded are the Gospel of Mary, the Gospel of Judas, the Gospel of Thomas, the Acts of Peter, and many of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Having grown up with the canonical Bible, I found the Gospel of Judas to be one of the most interesting, because it diverges so sharply from the traditional story. It was made public less than a decade ago, and it tells the story of Jesus' death from Judas' point of view. Did Judas betray Jesus? Quite the contrary; in this gospel, Jesus planned his own death, and Judas was the only person he told his "true" teachings to. In fact, Judas was the only disciple who could even get to heaven. Did Judas hang himself? Nope, he was stoned to death by the other disciples. Also, according to the document, there are multiple gods.

Just wants a hug.

This story, among many others, makes it clear that the authors of biblical texts were waging a war of politics. Which early Christians were most loved by God? Who could get into heaven, and who couldn't? 2 Timothy 3:16 says, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God", but how could this be so, if scripture contains different versions of the same story? Christians who believe 2 Timothy should understand that what they consider "scripture" was determined by religious leaders long ago. If those leaders had chosen different texts, Christianity would have been a very different religion.
