CHAMPAIGN, Illinois -- A secular group at [YOUR INSTITUTION HERE] will invite inquiries from their peers on April 13th, 2011 as a part of "National Ask An Atheist Day," an event aimed at promoting tolerance of nonbelief.
The event is being spearheaded by another campus group, the Illini Secular Student Alliance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This past February, ISSA members assembled on campus to invite their peers to "Ask An Atheist." The gathering was intended as an opportunity for the general public, particularly those of faith, to approach and ask questions about secular life in pursuit of greater awareness. Inspired by the success of the event, the group decided to reproduce the event on a broader scale. "National Ask An Atheist Day" will be a chance for members of the secular community to work together to defeat stereotypes about atheism and encourage courteous dialogue between believers and nonbelievers alike.
ISSA Vice President Franklin Kramer had the following message: "Americans have many inaccurate notions about the approximately 30 million nonreligious individuals living among them. National Ask an Atheist Day is the perfect opportunity to set the record straight. There are nonbelievers everywhere, and we're just like everyone else."
Added Kramer, "We'd love to see more nonreligious people join the cause, regardless of whether or not they are affiliated with a secular group. Together, we can improve perceptions of nonbelief the world over."
